To satisfy his intellectual curiosity.If that curiosity is dead the entire field of science is dead.Scientist seeks knolwedge because he loves knolwedge. "Science for the sake of Science,Research on mars for the sake of mars,research for the sake of curiosity, knolwedge for the sake of knolwedge, this is the foundation of scientific research..."

I do not think that the current science is mostly “pure science” as you seem to indicate. On the contrary, most of current science is application oriented. Only a small elites, even that in a narrow context, with well mapped out potential applications are working on “pure science”. Most scientists are employed to produce science that could derive technological dividend within a reasonable timeframe.

Your historical reference may be true. In the old days there was no systematic way to apply science in the production of technology. But, from late 1800’s science has been systematically applied to produce technology. Thus, today most of the science is application oriented than pure science. Else, suggest three projects that are involved in pure sciences.

From your caption, I get a sense that you are strong materialist. For a Tamil, that is indeed an extreme position.

That was an insightful comment Narkeeran,

Application oriented science is more popular, but IMHO Basic science(which you call as pure science) is what I believe to be real science.

Without basic research what will you apply? In field of science basic research journals are highly respected.Applied scientists consider it to be a great honor to publish in basic research journals.

For example Organization behavior and consumer behavior researchers dream about publishing in basic research journals like psychological bulletin and journal of psychology....

Applied science makes money and fame..yes, but basic science is what which fuels applied science.

//இந்த இரு வாதங்களில் வென்றது எந்த வாதம்?

you try to oversimplify issues.first of all science for the people is more broader than what you have assumed it to be.
science for the people does not mean that basic science should be
ignored.i dont know from where you pick up such funny ideas.you do not even know that whether basic
or applied science, science ultimately needs funding and infrastructure.who allocates the
funds and pay for the infrastructure.scientific curiosity per se does not get you grants. you dont understand the basics or the complex nature of issues. yiu tend to oversimplify
the matters and give a very simple
picture in terms of this vs that.
try to read a lot .

Selvan,

That was a thought provoking article. Which is important , searching solutions for specific technical problems OR searching for new basic knowlledge ?
Actually both are equally important . There is hardly any innovation which is not indebted to basic scientific research.

One example is the miracle called GPS which can tell our position and altitude anywhere on earth (give or take a few meters). Now lots of companies are developing GPS based systems catering to a multi billion dollar market . The GPS works by comparing time signals given by the atomic clocks in different satellites.(This is my understanding, let me know if I am wrong).

Earlier, atomic clocks were developed for basic research in the theory of relativity and to check if clocks run differently in different gravitaional fields. There was no motive other than this when the atomic clock was being developed. Now, look at the amount of revenue it generates.

It may be difficult to quantify the benefits of basic scientific research due to the long time lag between the basic discovery and its exploitation by a specific
technical research.

Dear anonymous,

I indeed over simplified things. It's because here I am writing for the public and not for the scientific community.

/scientific curiosity per se does not get you grants/

That's exactly my argument.I want scientific curiosity per se to get grants.

Thank you for the comments anonymous

Good point jayasri,

That's why I mentioned the atom example.Atoms are being researched from the time of greeks, but yet they have started to give results only before 100 years or so.

So we never know when any research will bear fruits. The best path to take is "knolwedge for the sake of knolwedge"

partner,
in the scientific community those who do research in 'applied fields' used to look down upon those who carry out ,basic research'. that is the 'caste system' among scientists. right?

Unknown said...

Partner,

You are right.Applied scientists are richer and get more funds and hence look down at basic researchers. But its the dream of every applied scientist to publish in a basic research journal. But actually basic research fields have lots of respect in the field, but less earnings.

I agree with Selvan. Had the curiosity scientists been waiting for "grant" we would still be eating animals - UNCOOKED =) //

Selven, if you look carefully, the noble winners are selected for the benefits that their basic research has lead to in their life time. That is for the applications that their basic research has produced. Thus, all science is application oriented.

How do you determine the worth of pure science?

Name one organization that will fund pure science without no foreseeable application?

How will you justify that you are not fooling the financier? If you can not convince anyone that your basic research will someday be useful? Then, why do such work?

Yes, basic researchers are gifted, and they should be recognized properly for their hard work. (As long as such recognition is performance based and not caste or colour based )

I do not think that actors worry about not publishing in basic science journals. Respect is one thing, but prestige…I am not sure.

Dear narkeeran,

I am not sure about the above said claim.Did CV Raman's findings have much practical value then?It spoke about color differentiation effects. But forgetting that I dont think nobel prize is the best criteria for evaluating a research.

//How do you determine the worth of pure science? //

"How do we determine the worth of a just born baby?..."

We dont know.We have no methods to evaluate its worth. What we have is expectations,hopes..that this baby will be a good citizen,son..but immediatly we dont know the worth of a just born baby.

Similarly the worth of a just invented basic scientific theory also cannot be evaluated. All we have is hopes,expectations....

//Name one organization that will fund pure science without no foreseeable application?//

Nasa.

Currently it is sending billions of dollars of missions to moons of saturn and neptune and mars....The practical value of such research is zilch.....

As I walk thorugh your various articles and comments about Marxism, I thought you have read a lot about Marxism. But the translation of 'Materialism' didn't sugest so (I assume, May be you have read about Marxism only in English)

Bonapert,

Thanks for the comments.I have read about marxism in tamil, but mostly it was from communists.I read about marx the philosopher from westerners.

The translation of materialists was given by Narkeern and not me.
